1st Timers' Frequently Asked Questions

First time stepping into a gym and have questions? We’ll answer them!

Q: What should I wear and bring?
A: You should be in workout attire like t shirt, track pants or shorts with sports shoes.  Towels will be provided.  Bring along a water bottle.

Q: I don’t know how to do the different exercises.  What should I do?
A: Don’t worry! We have weekly fitness workshops to not only teach you to perform exercises correctly but also information on program design and nutrition. You can also get 1-on-1 instruction from our qualified trainers by investing in personal training sessions.

Q: Will I get very sore the next day after my workout?
A: It is common to feel sore the day after your workout but the soreness will usually subside after a day or two.  However, after a few weeks of training your body should have adapted to training already and the amount of soreness you experience will thus decrease.  Do note that being sore isn’t indicative of an effective workout, and vice versa.

Q: How long should one workout last and how many times should I train per week?
A: Each workout should last for about an hour.  Beginners should try to come to the gym at least twice a week and also try to increase his/her physical activity levels (such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator) on a daily basis.  Every little bit helps.

Q: Should I eat before my workouts?
A: Yes, you should have a light meal about 1-2 hours before your workout and/or have a pre-workout shake that consists of some fast-digesting carbohydrates and protein.  This same shake can also be used post-workout.

Q: Can I negotiate for a cheaper membership price?
A: No.  At Unleash Fitness, we do not insult our members by slashing the price should a prospect negotiates for a discount, unlike the practices of some mega gyms here.  We find this to be very unfair to our members.  Rest assured that you will never pay more than any other member we have.

Q: Why are there so few machines in your gym?
A: There are 3 reasons why machines are inferior to free weights:

  1. Lack of use of stabilizing muscles which are essential for injury prevention and overall development of the human musculature
  2. Unequal distribution of weight (with the stronger side ‘helping’ the weaker side, the strong side gets stronger and the weak side gets weaker)
  1. Fixed planes of movement (movement is uniquely different for different individuals).  Forcing the body to adapt to a fixed plane of movement unnatural to the body can lead to injuries overtime

While it’s true that movements using free weights are harder to learn at first, they are surely more beneficial than machines in the long run.

Q: Can I bring a guest in?
A: Of course you can. He/she will also enjoy a discounted entry fee of $10 instead of our usual per entry price of $15.

Q: How fast should I lose weight?
A: Losing weight too quickly can be unhealthy.  Obviously, losing weight too slowly is not desirable either.  Depending on your size (with plus sized people being able to lose more), you should aim to lose about 1 pound per week.  It might sound little but do that consistently and you’re set to lose 52 pounds in a year!  Big achievement!
